Cubs urged to stay away from Dodgers $7.7 million All-Star

The Chicago Cubs will have some decisions to make this winter.

Chicago isn't far away from contending in the National League, and if the club could make a few key pickups, it could be right in the mix in 2025. The Cubs will have money to spend and could use a frontline starting pitcher.

While this is the case, FanSided's Rich Eberwein urged the Cubs to avoid signing Los Angeles Dodgers All-Star Walker Buehler.

"Walker Buehler is a former first-round pick and two-time All-Star entering his age-30 season," Eberwein said. "At one point, he was one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, culminating in a Cy Young-caliber campaign in 2021. That year, he amassed 207 2/3 innings with a 2.47 ERA and 212 strikeouts. He's never come close to replicating those numbers since...

"Buehler is hitting free agency after the postseason, where he will be one of the Dodgers' main starters given their list of extensive pitching injuries. His postseason performance could seriously impact where he ends up playing in 2025, but regardless, it should not be with the Cubs. The Cubs have an impressive list of starting pitching depth who will hopefully be more healthy in 2025."

Buehler was a star, but injuries have derailed his career. He is projected to get a deal worth under $8 million. If he could return to form, it would make sense for the Cubs, but there's no way to know if that will be in 2025.

Buehler is now probably better suited as a long reliever burning up 2-3 innings. Trying to get 4, 5 or 6 innings out of his arm every 4 days is asking for trouble. However he still has some excellent pitches and can throw heat. He might be an excellent find in the closer role.
