Bears urged to sign 49ers Pro Bowler to address 'biggest weakness'

The future has almost never looked brighter for the Chicago Bears.

Riding high at 3-2 and coming off a dominant win over the Carolina Panthers, the Bears have to be feeling bullish on their future championship hopes. Much of that is thanks to a trade they made with those very same Panthers, which secured them a star quarterback in Caleb Williams and one of his top targets in D.J. Moore.

Another piece of that Panthers trade was cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, who seemed to be on his way to stardom as well early in the 2024 season. But Stevenson has looked a little shakier than normal in coverage over the past few games, causing mild concern for Chicago.

If the Bears want to build the best defense possible, they may look to add one more dominant corner in addition to Stevenson and Jaylon Johnson. Luckily, there is a true number-one corner getting set to hit free agency this spring.

On Monday, Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department predicted that the Bears would land San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl and All-Pro corner Charvarius Ward, who emerged as one of the top defenders in the league during the 2023 season.

"The front office is currently projected to have about $73 million of cap space available this offseason, per Over The Cap , so it has the funds to go after a big fish and have one of the best cornerback duos in the league," the authors said.

"Paired with Jaylon Johnson, completions would be hard to come by in The Windy City seeing as Ward has 67 career passes defended, including four in the first four weeks of 2024."

Ward, 28, took a star turn in his sixth year in the NFL in 2023. He led all defenders with 23 pass breakups, set a new career-high with five interceptions, and was named a second-team All-Pro. He seems to have picked up where he left off thus far in 2024, breaking up four passes in his first five games.

Ward will surely be one of the most coveted defensive players on the market, and the 49ers are unlikely to be able to afford his contract. That opens the window up for the Bears, and they would be wise to pounce on the opportunity.
