Diamondbacks expected to retain both DH platoon pieces for 2025

The Arizona Diamondbacks were unable to defend their National League pennant from last October. While they finished 89-73 during the regular season, they fell just short of the postseason.

They have a few players that are set to hit the free agent market. This year, they went with a platoon at the designated hitter position, using Randal Grichuk against left-handed pitchers and Joc Pederson against righties.

Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report made several free agent predictions and noted that Arizona will likely retain both players for 2025.

"One other big one to keep an eye on is Joc Pederson's $14 million mutual option with the Diamondbacks," Miller wrote. "He had a dynamite year, but the fact he almost has to be the left-handed half of a DH platoon makes it unlikely he would get more than $14 million elsewhere. The Snakes also have a $6 million mutual option with Randal Grichuk, so maybe both halves of that platoon with return in 2025."

Pederson hit .275 with 23 home runs, 64 RBI, seven stolen bases, and a .908 OPS during the 2024 season, while Grichuk hit .291 with 12 home runs, 46 RBI, and an .876 OPS.

Arizona would be wise to pick up both options for 2025. It is not known at the moment what will happen with first baseman Christian Walker. The veteran slugger is a free agent, and Arizona may not be able to re-sign him.

So, it makes sense for the Diamondbacks to pick up the options for Grichuk and Pederson. Both performed well and formed a solid platoon at the DH spot.

The options also aren't going to break the bank for the small-market Diamondbacks if they are picked up. That allows them to keep two valuable sluggers at a good price.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Arizona this offseason. They'll have their sights set on returning to the postseason after falling just short this year.
