Phillies urged to sign $88 million All-Star after NLDS disappointment

The Philadelphia Phillies were eliminated by the New York Mets in the National League Division Series. They will now turn the page to free agency and try to acquire talent to get back in the World Series.

When listing players the Phillies could sign in free agency, FanSided's Zach Pressnell urged the Phillies to sign Anthony Santander of the Baltimore Orioles.

"He would slot in as an everyday bat, complementing the rest of the Phillies lineup perfectly. He's very similar to Kyle Schwarber, who's been loved and welcomed as a power bat in the Phillies lineup," wrote Pressnell.

The Phillies were in search of a power bat in the outfield all season, but never quite found the consistency they were looking for. Santander hit 44 home runs for the Orioles in 2024 and was named an All-Star.

"All season, the Phillies were searching desperately for a right-handed hitting outfielder to plug in as a platoon option for their push to the postseason," wrote Pressnell. "They ended up adding a few smaller options to fill this hole, but they never found the crowned jewel"

Spotrac projects Santander to earn a five-year, $88 million deal in free agency. He set a career-high in home runs and RBIs this season. The Phillies could use that power in the middle of their lineup next season.

"Heading into the offseason, this is still a huge hole for the team. There are a few options in free agency, like Teoscar Hernandez of the Dodgers. There's also the obvious option of Luis Robert Jr. as a trade target from the White Sox," wrote Pressnell. "But the best option to add a power hitter to this outfield isn't even a righty. He's a switch-hitter that could be an everyday, middle of the lineup bat for the 2025 Phillies."
