Proposed Cowboys and Dolphins trade sends Miami some quarterback help

The Miami Dolphins are in big trouble just five games into the 2024 season, as the team has been unable to overcome the loss of Tua Tagovailoa, whose status remains unclear heading into Week 6. Knowing that, the Dolphins should be in the market for a quarterback, and one NFL analyst believes the Dallas Cowboys could help.

In a recent article suggesting one trade for every team ahead of the 2024 deadline on Nov. 5, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin proposed a trade between the Dolphins and Cowboys that sends Trey Lance to South Beach.

After his failed stint with the San Francisco 49ers , who took him with the No. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lance was traded to the Cowboys last season.

"Tua Tagovailoa may return, but it feels irresponsible to trust he'll stay upright and/or safe," Benjamin wrote of the proposed trade. "Coach Mike McDaniel was with the San Francisco 49ers when the dynamic but unpolished Lance was drafted high."

The Dolphins have deployed Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson in Tagovailoa's absence, but neither have been effective. If Miami wants to weather the storm until Tua possibly returns, they need a better option.

But Lance is anything but a sure thing to be the upgrade Miami needs.

Lance has completed just 54.9% of his passes for 797 yards and five touchdowns to three interceptions and has just eight games under his belt. He also hasn't played a single snap since 2022 and has been prone to injury.

The Cowboys apparently don't think much of him, either, as Lance is currently listed as the No. 3 quarterback behind Cooper Rush.

Perhaps Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel can unlock something in the 24-year-old quarterback. And, it wouldn't cost much to see if he can, as Lance isn't likely to garner anything more than a sixth- or seventh-round pick in a trade.

I will agree that the Dolphins are in need of a good backup QB, not a starter. The team is 1 game out of first place and they have a bye in week 6. Tua should miss only 1more game, the game against the Colts, which probably is a winnable game. Tua will be back after that, and at worst, he will be back at QB for a 2-4 team and with any luck, a 3-3 team!
