Utah comes off a bye week after its first conference loss as a member of the Big 12 and has been preparing to play an Arizona State team it has faced a dozen times over the last 14 years. College football in 2024 has provided a number of things we’ve never seen before, so add this to the list as a treat courtesy of realignment.

Arizona State vs. Utah odds: Spread, moneyline, total for Week 4 college football matchup

Utah opened as a 3-point favorite, but the line moved up with rumors of QB Cameron Rising’s likely return swirling. The total opened at 45.

Here are live Week 7 college football betting odds for the Utes vs. Sun Devils at top-rated US sportsbooks .

Cameron Rising eyes return for old rivalry in new league

The Sun Devils (4-1 SU, 4-1 ATS) and Utes (4-1 SU, 2-3 ATS) are both 1-1 in their new league, so considering that five conference teams enter the week undefeated with multiple wins, the loser here will be a longshot to fulfill its goal of reaching a Big 12 Championship Game in Year 1. For Utah, that was the expectation, as it was voted the preseason favorite by media. ASU was picked to finish last.

Utes QB Cameron Rising has been healthy for only the season-opening rout of Southern Utah, injuring the ring finger on his throwing hand on Sept. 7 against Baylor in what was rumored to be a minor injury. The seventh-year standout has been unable to play since. Rising suited up a couple of times, warmed up to play at Oklahoma State with a glove on and couldn’t throw with any zip, and now comes into this one a game-time decision despite no game last week and a full month having passed since the injury.

Although the Utes won in Stillwater with Isaac Wilson running the show, the first true freshman in program history to beat a ranked team was harassed and picked off twice in a 23-10 home loss to Arizona. Both quarterbacks practiced over the past two weeks, so the Sun Devils will have to be prepared to see either player, but will likely face Rising if there are no setbacks.

Arizona State is hosting its second straight game (10:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) and is a perfect 3-0 in Tempe, having survived 35-31 against Kansas last Saturday on a Sam Leavitt TD pass to Jordyn Tyson with 16 seconds left. Utah defeated the Sun Devils 55-3 last season, the worst defeat in HC Kenny Dillingham’s career, and has won the last four against ASU by a combined margin of 145-40 since Herm Edwards’ first group posted a 38-20 upset over the Utes in 2018.

Arizona State betting news and analysis

Cameron Skattebo ranks sixth nationally with 615 rushing yards and has scored six TDs, but he was shut down by the Utes last season, finishing with 31 yards on 12 carries in one of his worst performances as the team’s top rusher. He’s been elite in keeping the chains moving for ASU and faces a run defense that has uncharacteristically struggled with poor tackling, so count on Skattebo being the x-factor in this matchup. If he gets going and the Sun Devils can match Utah’s physicality, they can win outright a year after losing by 52.

    Utah betting news and analysis

Whether it’s Rising or Wilson at quarterback, Utah will feed Micah Bernard, who has 100-yard rushing games in three of his team’s four wins. The Utes rushed for 352 yards last season, and if they can even get half that, they’ll be tough to beat in Tempe. ASU is surrendering just 3.8 yards per carry, and Bernard was out injured for last season’s game, so his performance will be crucial. Utah was stopped on four fourth downs last week by Arizona, including twice inside the 10-yard line. Improving their efficiency in the red zone has been a major point of emphasis for HC Kyle Whittingham.

    • Arizona State’s Cam Skattebo TD: Anytime -110, First +550
    • 1H spread: Utah -2.5 (-118), Arizona State +2.5 (+102), O/U: 22.5

Utah vs. Arizona State prediction: Rising’s return lifts Utes

Whittingham has had his team’s full attention for the past two weeks since fundamentals cost them in a rare home loss. Getting a veteran QB back to help navigate a hostile atmosphere at Sun Devil Stadium and make winning plays in the red zone should make the difference in Utah bouncing back and staying in the Big 12 title hunt with a convincing road win over much improved ASU.
