Budding Red Sox star would understand the team trading him this offseason

The Boston Red Sox are watching other teams compete in the postseason from their couches for the third year in a row, so they'll have to make changes to their roster if they want to take part themselves.

One idea that's been tossed around a bit already is trading first baseman Triston Casas for starting pitching, which Boston could really use going forward.

Casas is coming off a down year that included a long stint on the injured list due to torn cartilage in his rib. He finished the season playing just 63 games and hitting .241 with an .800 OPS, 13 home runs and 32 stolen bases.

With so many young prospects coming up in the next year or so, the Red Sox will likely trade someone, and Casas understands if it's him.

“I think that the team and the organization should continue to strive for a championship whether I’m in the plans or not," Casas said (via. The Boston Globe ). "I don’t know what the front office has in store for this offseason in terms of restructuring the roster to try to become a playoff team. I want to be a part of the plans to make that happen, but if not, and they want to seek an outside source for me to try to bolster the roster, that’s well within their ability.”

Although it's something he gets from a business sense, the 24-year-old isn't itching to leave.

“Do I want it to be in Boston? Of course, because that’s all I know,” Casas said. “But if I’m moved on from, that’s fine. I understand why. There’s no need to explain much further than that.”

If Casas is healthy, he can be one of the best first basemen in baseball, and he's shown that already in a limited sample size. He's still young, and he can be a part of Boston's contending core for years to come if they allow him to be.
