What in the world was Broderick Jones doing on that one first quarter draw play?

Steelers’ 2023 first-round draft pick Broderick Jones cannot go a week without a noticeable miscue or two.

Sunday's win over the Raiders in Las Vegas was no different.

On 2nd and 10 in the first quarter against the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 6, the entire offensive line got into pass blocking sets when the ball was snapped.

That is, the entire offensive line except Jones got into their pass protection stances .

While Justin Fields dropped back, Jones rushed forward as if to run block, only to look confused when star defensive end Maxx Crosby ran right past him after the quarterback.

Maybe the call wasn't a draw play to begin with, nothing was said about it after the game. Maybe Fields just improvised with some quick thinking.

However, one likely explanation for this bizarre sequence is that Broderick Jones heard a run play, but did not process that that run play was a draw, meaning he would have to pass block.

Perhaps he just heard the wrong play call. We may never know, but two things are for sure:
    1. Broderick Jones started the season hurt, now healthy and is still not living up to his first-round pedigree.
    2. It's difficult to let Steelers offensive line coach Pat Meyer off the hook for the constant mental mistakes and assignment confusions that Jones and other offensive line players suffer from all too frequently.
