Blue Jays expected to make 'astronomical' offer for $600 million superstar

The Toronto Blue Jays are seemingly in an uncomfortable spot. But they could quickly turn things around and make the rest of their division uncomfortable instead.

Though they entered the 2024 season with postseason expectations, the Blue Jays fell flat and finished dead last in the American League East. Their roster is getting more expensive year after year, and some have speculated that superstars Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette could wind up being traded.

Based on the latest rumors, it doesn't sound like the Blue Jays are planning on shedding any salary for 2025. In fact, they could be planning to add the biggest single-player salary in franchise history to their payroll.

Randy Miller of NJ.com spoke to a friend of New York Yankees superstar Juan Soto, who said he had heard the Blue Jays were planning to make a power play for the four-time All-Star this winter.

“Look for the Blue Jays to make an astronomical offer,” Soto's friend reportedly said. "I know their management thinks Soto and Guerrero for them would be what Soto and (Aaron) Judge were like this year for the Yankees.”

Soto has been excellent in New York and the Yankees are sure to want him back. But Soto's friend wasn't sure if the Yankees would have the money to bring the superstar back.

“Too low,” Soto’s friend said, when asked if a $500 million contract would be sufficient to keep Soto. “The number has to start with a six. Soto’s still 25 years old. I also can tell you that I doubt he takes any deferred money.”

After a career-high 41 home runs and a .989 OPS, Soto is hitting the market at the perfect time, as he turns 26 at the end of this month. Any team would want him, but only the teams that prove to be serious about paying premium prices will be under consideration.

Evidently, the Blue Jays may be one of those teams. And the higher the bidding gets, the more likely it could be that Toronto is the last team left standing.
