A reunion between Red Sox and 2024 closer doesn't make sense in free agency

The Boston Red Sox are sitting on their couches watching the Cleveland Guardians and New York Yankees compete in the ALCS with the hopes that they'll be playing in the series in 2025.

In order for that dream to become a reality, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow must improve the roster to give his team a shot at becoming legitimate World Series contenders.

While Boston has 11 players set to hit the market from their 2024 squad, they should be looking to upgrade at a few spots, including closer.

Kenley Jansen held down the role this past season, posting a 3.29 ERA, 1.061 WHIP and a 10.2 K/9 in 54 2/3 innings (54 games). And now, at 37 years old, he's expected to make roughly $15 million per year in his next deal.

The Red Sox would be smart to look at other options to be their closer in 2025.

There's a slew of veteran options outside of the organization who are hitting free agency as well as a few options from inside the organization would could slide in, including Justin Slaten, Garrett Whitlock and Luis Guerrero.

Boston could save some money and have a closer locked down for the foreseeable future if they decide to move on from Jansen, and considering some of his teammates were upset with him for leaving at the end of the year, that's probably the way the Red Sox are leaning.
