Lions named possible landing spot for two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher

The Detroit Lions have legitimate Super Bowl aspirations in 2024, as head coach Dan Campbell's squad is one of the elite teams in the NFL. However, their chances of capturing the franchise's first Super Bowl took a hit recently.

During a blowout victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6, the Lions lost star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who was in the midst of a career year that was catapulting him to superstardom.

Hutchinson is the second season-ending injury the Lions have suffered to their pass-rush this year, with the other happening to veteran Marcus Davenport. It goes without saying Detroit desperately needs help along the edge.

With that in mind, Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox recently suggested New York Jets edge rusher Haason Reddick as a possible option for the Lions. Here's what he wrote:

"The Detroit Lions should be at the front of the line for any available pass-rushers," Knox said. "The 4-1 Lions are among the league's top Super Bowl contenders, but they just lost star pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson to a broken leg. Hutchinson's injury came not long after Detroit placed edge-rusher Marcus Davenport on injured reserve with a triceps injury."

We couldn't agree more with Knox when he says the Lions should be at the front of the line for available edge rushers, and that's especially true for those who have the kind of track record of Reddick, a two-time Pro Bowler who has tallied double-digit sacks in each of the past four years.

The Lions have shown at least some interest in Reddick after they reportedly checked in on him recently, but there are some hurdles to jump before they can actually pull the trigger on a deal, assuming they are indeed interested in him.

For starters, the Jets and Lions would have to figure out draft pick compensation. The Jets traded a conditional third to the Philadelphia Eagles for Reddick, but that pick becomes a second if New York trades him to an NFC team. The Jets will almost certainly want to recoup that pick for a trade with Detroit to happen.

Once the trade compensation is figured out, the Lions will have to extend Reddick, unless he's willing to move off his stance that has kept him out of football all this time.

That isn't likely to happen, but the good news is Reddick is still young enough (30) that the Lions can sign him to a multi-year deal and not be overly concerned about it, and they have the future cap space to do it.

One final concern will be Reddick's condition after not playing football this long, but that's just a risk the Lions will have to take if they want a chance at securing someone who could at least approach what Hutchinson can do.
