76ers positioned for blockbuster trade due to Clippers' uncertain future

Los Angeles Clippers star Kawhi Leonard has dealt with injuries in recent years, but no one expected Thursday's stunning report.

Leonard "is expected to be sidelined for indefinite period of time to start the NBA season as he rehabilitates the inflammation in his right knee," according to ESPN's Shams Charania and Ohm Youngmisuk. This is terrible news for the Clippers and Leonard, as he continues seeking a return to full health.

More unfortunate news is the Clippers own little of their own draft capital, including their 2028 and 2029 first-round picks. These two selections belong to the Philadelphia 76ers as a result of the James Harden trade. Philadelphia could look to move off these picks sooner than later as LA navigates their uncertain future. The value of the first-round picks skyrockets even further if Leonard lands elsewhere or even considers retirement.

There are a multitude of star-level players from the 2021 NBA Draft class not under contract past this season. If their respective organizations are unwilling to extend their deals, the Sixers could swoop in for a rental to assist their championship push.

A few of the best potential targets are Trey Murphy III (New Orleans Pelicans), Jalen Johnson (Atlanta Hawks), Jonathan Kuminga (Golden State Warriors), Moses Moody (Warriors), and Corey Kispert (Washington Wizards). Any of these players could increase their championship odds and lengthen the window considering their age.

The hope for the Clippers remains that Leonard makes a full recovery, returning to superstar form.
