Guardians predicted to trade for talented Red Sox outfielder this offseason

The Cleveland Guardians are hoping that they don’t have to think about the offseason for at least another couple of weeks.

Cleveland is three wins away from a World Series berth, but they’ll have to outclass a loaded New York Yankees team first.

Whenever the Guardians’ season does end, they’ll be looking ahead to 2025 in which more winning opportunities await them. Cleveland has no reason but to be anything other than open on the trade market this winter, especially if a young bat presents itself.

Such a slugger could arrive on Cleveland’s doorstep in the form of Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer listed the Guardians as a potential destination for Abreu in a new piece on Friday.

“Between Rafael Devers, Jarren Duran, Triston Casas, Wilyer Abreu, Masataka Yoshida and David Hamilton, the Red Sox have an unhealthy number of left-handed hitters,” Rymer said.

“Predicting that one of them will get traded this winter is a layup, but harder to determine is which one should go. For example, trading Casas would allow for a potential move to first for Devers. There's otherwise a solid argument for selling high on Duran.”

“On the other hand, Abreu is only 25 and his club control runs through 2029. He's a valuable asset just on those terms, which is to say nothing of how he had a solid .781 OPS and outstanding defensive metrics as a rookie this season.”

“Potential fits: Pittsburgh Pirates, Kansas City Royals, Cleveland Guardians.”

Abreu exceeded all expectations during his rookie season in Boston, and he’d fit like a glove in Cleveland’s lineup. If the opportunity presents itself, the Guardians should have an offer for Abreu ready at the helm.
