Denver Broncos are fortunate to get recently released player back

    By Travis Wakeman,

The Denver Broncos released Blake Watson ahead of their Thursday night game against the New Orleans Saints in order to clear a roster spot as Mike McGlinchey, Baron Browning and Damarri Mathis were all activated from injured reserve.

Watson cleared waivers and the Broncos have chosen to bring him back as a practice squad member. Watson, an undrafted running back out of Memphis, was one of the top undrafted players on the market following the draft. He signed with the Broncos but was also selected in the second round of the UFL Draft by the Memphis Showboats.

He then made the Broncos' 53-man roster out of training camp, and though he's been a healthy scratch in all but one game, he was ascending the depth chart nicely. That is why his release ahead of the team's Week 7 game was surprising.

The Broncos are fortunate that another team did not claim Watson and though putting him on the practice squad still leaves him exposed to being signed by another team, he is still with the organization and can continue his growth in Denver.

Broncos need to show commitment to Blake Watson

Watson is a talented player who showed his skills in college at both Old Dominion and Memphis. He can fit nicely into any running back rotation and where he will really benefit a team will be as a receiver of the backfield.

The Broncos are not exactly deep at running back with Javonte Williams, Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime as the only running backs on the roster. The team did put forth a tremendous effort in running the football against the Saints, but the team needs to find more consistency in that department.

Watson is a name to watch for the future and the Broncos need to recognize that before another team takes advantage of their oversight.
