LSU coach who’s an ECU alumnus deemed a strong head coaching candidate for Pirates job

LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan has been linked to the East Carolina head coaching position that opened up on October 20 with Mike Houston’s firing. On3’s Peter Nakos sees his experience in Greenville as a former ECU QB and, after that, administrative assistant, as the kind of resume-builder that could help land him the job.

“The 37-year-old graduated from East Carolina in 2008,” Nakos prefaced before saying, “A former backup quarterback for the Pirates, he got his coaching start as an administrative assistant with an emphasis on recruiting in Greenville. In his third season at LSU and his first with playcalling duties for the Tigers, Joe Sloan helped Jayden Daniels win the Heisman Trophy in 2023. LSU ranks No. 25 in the nation in total offense and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier has thrown for 2,222 yards this season. Is he ready for a head coaching job?”

Sloan would bring an offensive-minded approach to a program that was burned by the last offensive mind the Pirates handed the program to, Scottie Montgomery. After developing Jayden Daniels from a problem in Arizona State’s locker room into a Heisman winner in LSU’s, Sloan certainly has the narrative on his side if/when he meets with ECU’s brain trust.

Joe Sloan would improve ECU’s recruiting if hired

Sloan has a reputation as both a master skills developer and an elite recruiter. East Carolina wouldn’t be sacrificing anything on or off the field bringing him on.

Sloan has made a name for himself in Louisiana at both LSU and Louisiana Tech, but there’s no better story in college football than a homecoming.

If it’s time to become a head coach, Sloan may just make his way to his alma mater to do it.
