Mets urged to sign $180 million ace to help reach 2025 World Series

The New York Mets' magical postseason run ended in the National League Championship Series.

The Mets had an unexpected run of success in the postseason but fell two wins short of the National League pennant. While listing free agents the Mets could sign to reach the 2025 World Series, FanSided's Zach Pressnell urged the Mets to sign Corbin Burnes of the Baltimore Orioles.

"Baltimore Orioles ace, Corbin Burnes, is set to enter free agency this offseason. Just about every team in baseball, including the Orioles, will be interested in bringing Burnes to their city," wrote Pressnell. "The difference between the rest of the league and the Mets is how much money the Mets are willing to spend."

Spotrac projects Burnes to sign a six-year, $180 million deal in free agency. The Mets' biggest priority should be to sign Pete Alopnso, but adding an ace should be a close second.

"Burnes will be an expensive player to pull away from Baltimore, but he would come in and likely be a top two arm in the NL East, if not the best arm in the division," wrote Pressnell.

Burnes had a 2.92 ERA last year and was named to his fourth consecutive All-Starr Game. He will be a free agent for the first time in his career. He won the National League Cy Young Award in 2021. He will be one of the most sought-after free agents this offseason.

The Mets will need to prioritize the starting rotation after the inconsistencies displayed in 2024. Burnes could be a long-term solution and lead a deep postseason run next year.
