Lions trade proposal sends $13 million edge rusher to Detroit

The Detroit Lions picked up their sixth win of the 2024 campaign in dominant fashion, as Dan Campbell's squad annihilated the Tennessee Titans by a score of 52-14. Detroit is now 6-1 and is establishing itself as the strongest team in the NFC and one of the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

Though the Lions are one of the most complete rosters in the league, the team still has some glaring weaknesses, especially in the pass-rushing department. Season-ending injuries to Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport have decimated the unit, and Detroit must address the issue at the trade deadline.

Head coach Dan Campbell hinted that a deal could be on the horizon, jokingly stating "could be" when reporters asked him if general manager Brad Holmes approached him about a trade, per Colton Pouncy of The Athletic.

There are a ton of options on the open market, but PFF's Bradley Locker believes New Orleans Saints edge rusher Chase Young is the best fit to fill the Lions' most pressing need.

Having been on three teams in the last two seasons, Young is accustomed to finding a new landing spot. Now healthy, the former No. 2 overall pick would be a wise add for the Lions to replace Hutchinson for just 2024.

Young isn't a phenomenal player and hasn't lived up to lofty expectations in his career, but the former Ohio State Buckeye could be a low-risk, high-reward acquisition for the Lions. The 25-year-old has posted two sacks and 30 quarterback pressures through eight games in 2024.

Trading for Young shouldn't be an issue for Detroit, as a Day 3 pick should be enough to bring the 2020 No.2 overall pick to the Motor City. Additionally, Young's expiring contract causes little financial risk for the Lions in a potential deal.

There are more appealing options on the market, but Chase Young would be a solid addition to Aaron Glenn's defense. The veteran would immediately step in as the team's primary pass rusher and bolster an inconsistent defense. There is almost no risk involved for Detroit and a massive reward if things go well.
