Okay the American women made a very loud statement today with a dominating performance. In the women’s 4x100m medley relay the American women set a new world record time of 3:49.63. They beat the record by nearly a full second. Coming in second was Australia (3:53.11) about three seconds behind the Americans. And China edged out the Canadians to take the Bronze.

The team was composed of Regan Smith, Lilly King, Gretchen Walsh, and Torri Huske. Regan Smith got the party started by setting a blazing pace on the first leg of the relay with the backstroke. She took the lead on the second half of her leg. Then it was time for some redemption for Lilly King after she suffered a disappointing showing in her individual events. She got her redemption and extended the lead for the team.

Next up was Gretchen Walsh who was not a stranger to relay racing. The previous day she had helped America win gold in the Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay. That race was closely contested but Walsh made sure this one wasn’t. She again swam the butterfly leg and furthered the lead of the U.S.

And then there was one. Torri Huske had the job of finishing the race out and she did that. Huske was also a member of the gold-winning Mixed 4x100m Medley Relay. She finished that race holding off the surging Chinese team. This time she had a huge lead and made it even bigger. She, like her teammates, never took her foot off the gas, swimming like her life depended on it. Huske, a rising star in swimming, ended up winning three gold and two silver medals in these Olympics.

This was an exciting relay race with the women swimming incredibly well. They clearly had great chemistry and the camaraderie among them no doubt contributing to their stellar victory. This relay wrapped up the final swimming gold of the the Paris games.

For those of you keeping score at home, America edged out Australia in the gold medal count 8-7. Overall the United States finished with 28 total medals in swimming at these Olympic games, two shy of their total three years ago in Tokyo.
