Earlier this year some people were calling for his resignation. However, we will get that situation a bit later; but for now let's focus on the fact that the Kansas City Chiefs have extended their kicker Harrison Butker. Butker himself, confirmed that a deal was reached with his post on social media. “There’s no place I’d rather be than with the Chiefs, excited to finalize a 4 year extension. To the Heights!” More details about the deal were provided by Adam Schefter. Schefter reported,

“Chiefs are signing standout kicker Harrison Butker to a four-year, $25.6 million extension that includes $17.75 million guaranteed, per sources. The deal ties Butker to KC through the 2028 season. Butker represented and negotiated the deal himself. Harrison Butker had one year remaining on the five-year, $20.3 million deal that he signed in 2019 that was scheduled to pay him $3.945 million this season. Now he adds on four more years to become the highest-paid kicker in NFL history."

So besides being a good kicker, he’s also a good negotiator as this deal puts him ahead of the pack. He is now the highest paid kicker in the NFL at $6.4 million per year. That edges him past Justin Tucker and Jake Elliott each of whom make $6 million per year. Following them are Matt Gay at $5.62M and Graham Gano at $5.5M per year. Last season Butker made 33 out of 35 field goal attempts and made 38 out of 38 extra point attempts. Butker also had an excellent postseason, making all 11 of his field goals throughout the Chiefs’ four playoff games and made all eight extra-point attempts.

But as we mentioned earlier, people had been demanding his resignation. Why get rid a kicker who is an asset to the team? Well some were not happy about what he said during a college commencement speech. Speaking at Benedictine College, a private Catholic liberal arts school, he congratulated the women receiving degrees. But below is the quote that really set off the controversy:

“I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. “Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother,” he said.

This was back in May and everyone has moved on. As did the Chiefs who got the deal done with Butker. So then, all that’s left now to do when it comes to Butker and Kansas City; is to kick off of the regular season.
