Gone too soon. On Tuesday, it was confirmed that former Major League Baseball player Billy Bean has passed at 60 after losing his battle with leukemia. Bean was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in 2023. Nevertheless, Bean played in the league for an entire decade and had been an impressive athlete in college.

LMU Baseball were among the first to post remembrance messages about Billy. Helping baseball fans and enthusiasts recollect the kind of athlete and player Bean had been on the field. LMU states,

“The LMU community mourns the passing of Lions baseball legend Billy Bean. The two-time All-American led the Lions to their sole appearance in the College World Series in 1986. Bean was inducted into the LMU Hall of Fame in 1992 and will forever be enshrined in Lions lore.”

The Detroit Tigers also released a brief statement online about Bean. The organization that drafted Billy back in 1986 in the fourth round. The Tigers mention,

“The Tigers organization extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Billy Bean, who made his Major League debut with the Tigers in 1987 and spent three seasons wearing the Olde English ‘D’.

Yes, Billy made his MLB debut with the Tigers on April 24, 1987. Playing with Detroit as an outfielder from 1987-1989. Bean would also go on to play for the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and in the NPB (Nippon Professional Baseball).

Major League Baseball also took to social media in order to extend their condolences; as well as discuss Billy’s impact on the sport. The MLB says,

We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague Billy Bean, MLB’s Senior VP for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion and Special Assistant to the Commissioner. Billy, who fought a heroic year-long battle with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, was 60.

Over the last 10 years, Billy worked passionately and tirelessly with MLB and all 30 Clubs, focusing on player education, and social justice initiatives to advance equality in the game for all.

Billy’s 10-year playing career included six Major League seasons with the Tigers, Dodgers, and Padres.

Commissioner Rob Manfred called Billy “one of the kindest and most respected individuals I have ever known” and someone who “made Baseball a better institution, both on and off the field.”

Before his passing Billy also worked with the MLB to help others fighting cancer. According to MLB.com just late last year Bean was helping to bring awareness to this unfortunate health issue that millions face every day. MLB reveals:

After receiving his diagnosis last September, Bean made it public in December. MLB’s annual Winter Meetings Charity Auction supported Stand Up to Cancer, which was selected after Bean and Catalina Villegas, MLB’s Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, were both diagnosed with cancer in 2023.

‘You just never know the opportunity that baseball provides,’ Bean said upon the launch of the auction. ‘Someone’s going to pay attention that maybe wouldn’t have otherwise. Hopefully what we’re doing saved a life today.’”

All of baseball has come together to say goodbye to one of their own. Our thoughts are with the Bean family, his close associates and friends.
