The American women athletes of these Olympic games have really been bringing the heat. And yesterday, Valarie Allman added fuel to the fire when she defended the gold medal in the discus throw. Taking the silver was Bin Feng of China and the bronze went to Sandra Elkasevia of Croatia.

Discus is one of those track and field sports that you know is part of the Games; but don’t usually see or hear much about. But that doesn’t make it any less worthy of receiving attention right now. As it was in the ancient Greek games, the men’s discus throw has been a part of the modern Olympic games since they began. And the women’s discus debuted along with the women’s 100m, 800m, 4x100m relay and high jump at the 1928 Amsterdam Games.

So the object of the sport is for an athlete to hurl a metal disc-shaped object as far as they can. Sounds simple, right? But hold on. They have to stand in a circle measuring 8.2 feet in diameter, spin around to build centrifugal force and release the discus. A net surrounds the thrower for safety.

Besides that the men’s discus weighs 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) and is 22 centimeters (8.66 inches) in diameter. The women’s discus weighs 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) and is 18 centimeters (7.09 inches) in diameter. Do you think you could hurl a discus with all your might and medal?

But for several years now that’s exactly what Valarie Allman has been doing. She began competing in the sport as a Junior in 2014. At Stanford University she was a seven-time All-American. In 2018, she was National Champion. And she reached the pinnacle in 2020 at the Tokyo Olympics where she won the gold medal.

After Tokyo she won the bronze in the 2022 World Athletics Championships. That made her the first American woman to win a world championship medal in the discus throw. And of course now she has won gold again in Paris increasing her dominance in the sport.

Here is something to note about Allman’s athletic prowess. During the event each competitor has six attempts. Silver medalist Bin Feng’s longest throw attempt was 67.51m. Whereas Allman’s shortest throw was 68.06m. In fact Allman’s personal best is 71.46 m (234 ft 5+1⁄4 in) which is a North American record.

Valarie Allman becomes the first American woman ever to win two Olympic gold medals in any field event!Congratulations to Allman on winning back-to-back Olympic gold medals in true dominant style.
