If you thought the men’s 1500m race was thrilling, then you were in for another treat. Quincy Hall raced to an epic come from behind win in the men’s 400m final. Just like the 1500m final, the field for this race was packed with the most elite runners in the world. There was Antonio Watson of Jamaica, the reigning world champion. And also, Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain who had beat out Hall in the 2023 World Championships and is ranked No. 2 in the world. Plus there was Muzala Samukonga from Zambia who set a national record in the semis. Just to name a few people, but there were plenty of other talented athletes on that track.

When the gun shot signaled the start of the race, Jereem Richards of Trinidad and Tobago jumped out early and led the race most of the way. It wasn’t looking good for Hall as he lagged behind. Coming into the final leg of the race he was in fourth place. But his kick, that he is known for, activated and Hall began to overtake his competitors. As the saying goes, “It’s not how you start it’s how you finish.” Hall expressed how he feels about his kick.

“That’s what I’m known for. I’m known to finish,” Hall said. “If you don’t get far away from me enough, I’m gon’ catch you. Every time.

“As soon as they shot that gun,” he added, “I knew I had it. You can’t get far enough.”

First he passed up Kirani James of Grenada, then he flew by Jereem Richards. And then finally he overtook Hudson-Smith to cross the finish line for the gold. It was amazing to behold such an epic comeback.

With his gold medal finish Hall this is the first American man in the 400m since the 2008 Beijing Games. LaShawn Merritt was the last one to take home the gold. But it has been a difficult road for Hall to reach this peak. He started at the community college level. And when he moved on to the University of South Carolina he had to practice alone and talk to his coach over the phone. Regarding his experiences he said:

“Oh, that’s where that grit comes from,” Hall said of his JUCO days at the College of the Sequoias. “When you have no food. You’ve got to get your own food. No cafeteria. No study hall. None of that. You find out how to be a dog by yourself.”

With that kind of determination, I’m pretty sure this won’t be his last Olympic appearance. But his debut was unforgettable.
