It quickly turned into a race for second place as the U.S. women got off to good start. And at the end of it a 36 year old record was almost broken in the women’s 4x400m relay. The four women on the team were Shamier Little, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, Gabby Thomas and Alexis Holmes. Except for Holmes, all of the women had won medals in these games. McLaughlin-Levrone had also set a world record in the 400m and won the gold medal.

Little ran the first lap and put the U.S. in great position. She had a beautifully smooth baton pass with McLaughlin-Levrone who took off like a shot. Immediately, she put distance between herself and the rest of the field. At one point, she was so far ahead that the other competitors weren’t in the camera’s view. When she passed the baton to Thomas, Thomas had a slight bobble. It looked like she might have stepped on the inside rail. But it didn’t matter because she quickly adjusted herself and kept running. It was estimated that she was about 30 meters ahead of the rest of the field.

The last baton exchange was clean and Holmes kept the ridiculous lead going. She cruised across the finish line four seconds ahead of everyone else. Femke Bol of the Netherlands pulled her team up from fourth place in the final lap to snatch the silver medal out the hands of Great Britain. They had to settle for the bronze again. But there is no shame in that. In fact, this win made for five relay medals from five finals with bronze in the final track event of the Paris Olympics.

But regarding the world record for the 4x400m relay it was set in 1988 by the Soviet Union. The winning Soviet time was 3:15.17, the USA women ran 3:15.27. They just missed tying the record by a tenth of a second. The American women’s 4x400m relay squad has been dominant since 1992. And with the women also winning the 4X100m relay they have swept the relays in four of the past five Olympics. Amazing!

The U.S. on the whole ran away with the track and field events. They swept every category in the hurdles eventswhich is the first time that has ever happened in history. And the men also took the gold in the 4x400m relay.
