He’s never been shy about letting it be known that he wants to play in the NFL again. So is there a path for Colin Kaepernick to return to the NFL? According to Jarret Bell there could be as he reported on his x.com account. “Colin Kaepernick still wants to play again, but Jim Harbaugh told me about his idea for bringing him back to the NFL in another capacity…” In his USA Today article Bell wrote:

While Kaepernick, 36, recently told Sky Sports that he still wants to play in the NFL, the new Los Angeles Chargers coach contends that he wants his former quarterback back in the NFL as a member of his coaching staff – and not so much as a player. And he quoted head coach Jim Harbaugh, “If that was ever the path he was to take, I think that would be tremendous,” Harbaugh told USA TODAY Sports. “He’d be a tremendous coach, if that’s the path he chose.”

However, it doesn’t appear that Kaepernick is in any rush to join the Chargers’ coaching staff. Bell’s article went on to say:

During an interview following a training camp practice last week, Harbaugh said shortly after he returned to the NFL in January, he talked to Kaepernick about joining the Chargers in a non-playing capacity. Yet in the months since, there’s been no movement on the possibility.

“Yeah, we talked a little bit about it,” Harbaugh said. “He’s considering it. He was out of the country. He said he was going to get back to me. We haven’t reconnected since then. That was early, early in the year.”

However, this week Harbaugh seemingly squashed any expectations about Kaepernick’s return. At least, this season. Especially, since communication had been so limited between the two parties. Jim mentions, “I love Colin, but he’s not going to be on the coaching staff, which is set for this year. And he’s not going to be playing on the roster either,” Harbaugh said after Thursday’s practice.

Colin Kaepernick's career spanned six years, from 2011 to 2016. In 2016, Kapernick began kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality. As a result, these actions led to some consequences. Loss of a professional football career, while being ostracized by the NFL, leading to him suing the league in 2017 under the collective bargaining agreement. Former player Eric Reid had also filed a similar grievance. In 2019, both settled their respective collusion grievances against the NFL. Financial terms of the settlements were not disclosed.

Despite all that, Kaepernick still wants to play in the NFL. Yet, that dream is slipping away; if not gone. Colin will soon be 37. Nevertheless, the fact Harbaugh even suggested he join his coaching staff sounds like there's no bad blood between the NFL and Colin. A head coach wouldn't offer a possible position if the league was not okay with the idea. So then, in Colin's case this situation could be seen as a positive and a bit of steppingstone back to the game. But only time shall tell.
