Missing the Olympics? Missing global sports competition? Well, now you can begin to fill the void as the 2024 Paris Paralympics Opening Ceremony kicks off over a week’s worth of events and activities.

The Paralympics commence on August 28th. But shall continue on till September 8. Furthermore, these Games include some “firsts.” For instance, this is the first summer Paralympic Games to take place in France, and the first time since COVID-19 that spectators are allowed to fill the stands.

Over 30,000 sports supporters came out to see the opening ceremony. And cheer on the global delegations. Tickets were free to all who wished to attend, and it was packed.

Nonetheless, some quick history fun facts to consider and know about the world’s biggest international sports event. The Olympics and Paralympics are both multi-sport events and have been held in the same city and year since the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul; and the 1992 Winter Games in France.

The competitions are truly held in tandem. The word “Paralympic” includes the Greek preposition “para,” meaning “beside.” So then, the next time you see the word Paralympics, it’ll hold a bit more meaning. And will be something interesting to share with friends and family.

The Opening Ceremony for Paris Paralympics

Getting to the opening ceremony, it had the same vibe and high energy as the Olympics. It featured plenty of dance performances, singing musical numbers and the mascot of the Olympics and Paralympics (Les Phryges).

However, a real noticeable difference for those that also watched the Olympics opening ceremony, is that the Paralympics version was localized. It primarily stayed in one area and place. Whereas the Olympics featured several iconic Parisian landmarks in the backdrop.

The Paralympic opening ceremony was held with the Obelisk of Luxor standing tall in the center of all the show action. The Obelisk of Luxor is a beautiful Egyptian obelisk standing right in the middle of the Place de la Concorde. This 3,000 years old monument was given to France as a gift from the Egyptian government. The giant obelisk was originally situated at the entrance to the Luxor Temple in Egypt, hence its name.

After several theatric numbers it was time for the March of Nations. Beginning with Afghanistan and moving all the way down to the United States (who went second to last since they will host in 2028); and of course, finishing with France. The march is certainly picture worthy. As the athletes make their way down the Champs Elysées to the Place de la Concorde.

One by one, each delegation makes it way. As the sun sets. Then becomes night. Which is perfect for the light show!

In the background the Eiffel Tower sparkles. But it is the Obelisk of Luxor that really takes on new life. Graphics are flashed onto the Obelisk and the electronic floor showing ancient athletes competing. Very cool.

However, soon after it is time for a fan favorite, the lighting of the cauldron. The French understand art and drama; and in this instance they utilize both well. Incorporating opera, orchestra, fire and dance elements. Quite a scene to behold.

There were five torchbearers who had the honor of lighting the cauldron. Nantenin Keita, Charles-Antoine Kouakou, Fabien Lamirault, Elodie Lorandi and Alexis Hanquiquant. The hot air balloon cauldron reflects upon the French designers that first invented the flying aircraft. A brilliant touch of history.

Opening Ceremony Conclusion

The ceremony also includes a very well put together montage of Paralympic history as well as a few speeches. Speeches highlighting the importance of supporting those with disabilities and helping them to reach their dreams and goals. Moreover, throughout the day it is wonderful to see the smiling faces of all the athletes and participants who are ready to compete.

Nevertheless, now that the flames are burning bright, it is time for the summer Paralympics to commence. The Games will feature 4,400 athletes who will compete in 549 medal events across 22 sports between 28 August and 8 September. Team USA will have 225 athletes participate, among them including the women’s wheelchair basketball team, who won gold in the 2023 Santiago Parapan American Games.
