Tommy is a guy who gets moved quite often; despite proving to be effective roster piece. Just last year he helped the Arizona Diamondbacks have a deep run during the 2023 postseason and snag a World Series appearance. However, yet again Pham finds himself looking for a new home. It has been confirmed that the St. Louis Cardinals have placed Tommy Pham on waivers; therefore, it is a good time to quickly take a look at his situation; as well as the MLB waivers process before the playoffs commence.

Especially, with September looming just around the corner. Teams in the hunt for a playoff spot will have to determine and figure out their rosters. So any sort of pickups will need to be decided on promptly.

Sports journalist, Katie Woo of The Athletic confirms the news about Pham and the Cardinals. She states,

“The Cardinals are placing Tommy Pham on waivers. The decision to place Pham on waivers is arguably also the best decision for his sake. Pham, who wants to play in 2025, will have an opportunity to land with a contending team and/or a team that will play him every day. He wasn’t going to be used as a full-time starter in STL.”

There are certainly teams out there that will take a look at Pham; as well as other players now up for grabs during the next few hours. As they look to fill holes and gaps. And make their teams stronger in hopes of getting a championship.

However, if you are wondering how things will work with the waiver process around this time of year. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel provides a nice overview of the current MLB situation and what to expect. He mentions,

“[The] MLB avoided a problem today with a few players hitting waivers, unlike last year’s Angels-led cavalcade. Among the less than 10 players on today’s list: Tommy Pham (STL), Robbie Grossman, Travis Jankowski (TEX), and Nicky Lopez (CHW), per sources.

Teams can claim these players, assume their contracts, and the players would be eligible for the playoff roster. Today was the last day to start this process, as outright waivers takes 48 hours and the playoff roster cutoff is Sept 1st. Players can still play while on waivers.

Claims are awarded in reverse order of team winning percentage on the day the claims are decided, which would be Aug 31st for these players.

And, if unclaimed, these players can still stay with their clubs. This is basically a way for a team to trade the player for nothing/dump their contracts and clear a roster spot, if another team will take on their contract. Yes, this is confusing and different than trade waivers.”

Great explanation. So then, will Pham or the others be welcomed by another ball club? Most likely we will know very soon. We’ll keep you updated.
