However, details remained scarce for several hours. There was a lone journalist on social media platform X (formerly Twitter); that had originally broke the news first. But due to fan backlash, outrage and a lack of confirmation by the authorities; the post was soon deleted by its author.

Furthermore, fans also then took things upon themselves to investigate this shocking matter. Calling the police station and finding an apparent “leak” from a coroner who had shared his notes in a friend group chat that Johnny and Matthew had indeed passed. But fortunately, the photo of the notepad has been widely removed and wiped from online. If you search for it, it should be rare to find.

Nevertheless, it would still take hours for those in charge of the situation and investigation to not only confirm the identities of the deceased. But also inform the family, as well as decipher how and why the driver that had committed the crime. Thankfully, the driver that had hit the Gaudreau brothers had not fled the area. ABC Action news had the only and first report of the incident. The news outlet stated,

“Two bicyclists were struck and killed by a vehicle on Thursday night in Salem County, New Jersey.

It happened around 8:30 p.m. on Pennsville Auburn Road near Stumpy Lane in Oldmans Township.

According to New Jersey State Police, the driver did stay at the scene. However, that person is suspected of driving under the influence.”

Hours later, the intoxication was confirmed and the driver apprehended. But then reality also set in. Matthew and Johnny were indeed gone.

Friday morning, the New Jersey police announced everyone’s worst fears. The two deceased bicyclists were indeed, the Gaudreau brothers. Johnny was 31, and Matthew was 29. The brothers were in New Jersey in order to be groomsmen in their sister’s (Katie) wedding.

Nevertheless, more details regarding what occurred on Thursday evening have now come to light. Including the exact location of the accident, as well as the driver who caused it. The Columbus Dispatch reveals,

“Columbus Blue Jackets star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother, Matthew, were killed Thursday night when they were struck by a suspected drunk driver while bicycling in Oldmans Township, New Jersey, close to their hometown in Salem County there, New Jersey State Police said.

New Jersey State Police said the Gaudreau brothers died after a suspected drunk driver crashed into them shortly before 8:30 p.m. as they biked along rural Pennsville Auburn Road (Salem County Route 551).

The driver, Sean M. Higgins, 43, of Woodstown, New Jersey, was charged with two counts of death by auto, also known as vehicular homicide, and taken to the Salem County Correctional Facility.

At his preliminary court hearing Friday, Higgins’ arraignment was rescheduled to next Thursday and he will remain in the Salem County jail until then. He was also instructed not to discuss the case with anyone while in jail except for his attorney. Higgins asked Judge Michael Silviano about the process of getting an attorney.”

Since the confirmation of the accident many have come forward to pay their respects. And there is a growing memorial outside Nationwide arena for “Johnny Hockey.” Johnny Gaudreau leaves behind his wife, Meredith, and two young children, a daughter, Noa, and son, Johnny, who both were born in Columbus. Matthew Gaudreau is survived by his wife, Madeline.
