And we have now struck gold in those hills! On day two of competition action, Team USA got their first opportunity to stand on top of the podium. All thanks to Paralympic swimmer Gia Pergolini winning Team USA its first gold medal.

Pergolini competed in the women’s 100m backstroke S13 gold final. And it was pure domination. Just after swimming the first 25m she had the lead. At 50m making the turn she led by at least half a body length.

Then she turned on the jets. Rapidly cruising home. Over a full body length in front of her competitors and just under world record pace. She touches the wall first, and the gold is hers!

Pergolini’s excitement after her big race was extremely apparent. She was all smiles, and just beside herself. A wonderful moment to behold of a woman who has worked so hard, and overcome so much.

Gia conversed with the press after earning her gleaming gold hardware. She was asked how does it feel to win the first 2024 Paralympic gold medal for the United States. She answers,

“I mean, I was just looking at the Olympians that competed here three weeks ago, a month ago. And they did so well and I was like, ‘you know, I have to bring home the gold for the United States and try to keep what the Olympians did for us. And it’s just such an amazing feeling.

I’m just so happy to represent this country, and win its first gold. I mean, [this] never gets old. It really never gets old, but it was painful. You would think it would get easier, as time goes on, but I’m dying; but it was so great!”

As one can see, Gia really gave it her all. She went to her very depths, fought through the pain; and emerged a champion. Therefore, congratulations to Gia Pergolini on swimming her way to victory and putting Team USA on the medal count board with their first gold medal.
