Just two days after the market for cornerbacks was reset it has been adjusted again. Patrick Surtain II was made the highest paid cornerback in the league by the Denver Broncos. But the Miami Dolphins one-upped them with a new deal for their premier cornerback. Jalen Ramsey and the Miami Dolphins have reached an agreement on a new deal. Per Adam Schefter here are the details:

Jalen Ramsey and the Dolphins have reached an agreement on a three-year extension worth $24.1 million per year to make him the highest-paid CB in NFL history for a second time in his career. Deal negotiated by David Mulugheta of Athletes First.

With this contract Ramsey squeezed by Surtain in terms of annual salary per year. Ramsey will get $24.1 million as opposed to Surtain earning $24 million. Schefter further reported that:

Starting this season, Jalen Ramsey is guaranteed to earn $55.3M, which ensures he will have the highest career earnings for a Cornerback in NFL History. The highest-paid CBs in the NFL on a per-year basis are now: Jalen Ramsey: $24.1M, Patrick Surtain: $24M, Jaire Alexander: $21M, AJ Terrell: $20.25M, and Denzel Ward: $20.1M

Former wide receiver Chad “Ochocinco” Johnson weighed in on the topic of the highest paid CB’s: “Derek Stingley & Sauce will reset the market with Woolen & Horn as well.”

And he’s probably right about that. The cornerback market is heating up with the contracts that have been signed of late. Ramsey is certainly worth his three-year $72.3 million contract extension. The Dolphins acquired Ramsey via trade before the 2023 season to be a shutdown corner, blanketing one side of the field. And he did that in 2023 when he only played in 10 games but posted three interceptions and five pass break-ups.

His play resulted in a 52.9 passer rating for opposing quarterbacks he threw his way. His performance was instrumental in getting the Dolphins into the playoffs last season. And Ramsey is also a seven-time Pro Bowler.

However, new Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver plans on moving the CB around more. In his introductory press conference back in February he said:

“You talk about prototype corners, he is that,” Weaver said, via the team’s official transcript. “Size, length, speed, competitiveness. The thing about him is I think he is your ultimate chess piece. So to have him just sit outside and be a field corner or boundary corner or something like that is a detriment to him. We got to find ways to move him around where he can be most impactful. We’re committed to doing that.”

It’ll be fun to see how it works out.
