It wasn’t the outcome they were hoping for with Aaron Rodgers back under center. And RB Christian McCaffrey was out due to a calf and Achilles injury. But out in San Francisco the New York Jets came up short against the 49ers. They got off to a promising start on their first drive of the game. Rodgers passed the ball around to WR Garrett Wilson and RB Breece Hall marching 70 yards in 14 plays for the touchdown. However, during the drive the Jets run game was stuffed by the 49ers’ defense. After that drive things went downhill. On their next possession Hall fumbled the ball and the 49ers recovered it. But they had to punt and the Jets did the same on their next drive.

In the second quarter the 49ers scored two field goals and a touchdown. A lot of the production for the 49ers came from undrafted rookie RB Jordan Mason. He did an exceptional job stepping in to fill the very large shoes of McCaffrey. He ended the night with 28 carries, 147 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.25 yards per carry. Now the 49ers know they have a capable backup in case McCaffrey has to miss additional games. At halftime the 49ers were up 16-7.

The 49ers got the ball to start the third quarter and turned to their passing game. They went 75 yards in 14 plays eating up 7:18 of the clock. It was Mason who ran the ball into the end zone for a five-yard touchdown. On the third play of the Jets first possession Rodgers threw the ball a bit behind Wilson and was intercepted. Deommodore Lenoir deflected the ball right to Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles who caught it. The 49ers had to settle for a 53-yard field goal.

Rodgers threw for a 36-yard touchdown to Allen Lazard to close out the third quarter. In the fourth quarter the 49ers kicked two more field goals. The second one came following the Jets failing to convert on 4th and 1. After that for the last Jets possession of the game Rodgers remained on the sideline. At that point the score was 13-32. Backup QB Tyrod Taylor came in and drove them down the field resulting in a 3-yard pass to Lazard for the touchdown. But they failed on the 2-pt conversion. The final score was 19-32.

The 49ers were balanced with their running and passing plays. Whereas it looked like Rodgers wasn’t on the same page with his receivers at times. The Jets defense couldn’t stop the run. The 49ers defense looked solid. And that concludes Week 1.
