Why doesn’t Ja’Marr Chase have a new deal in place with the season underway? Well, there had been talk that they were close to getting it done. But Ja’Marr Chase and the Cincinnati Bengals have now hit a snag in contract negotiations. However, difficult contract negotiations is nothing new to the Bengals’ organization. The contentious negotiations with former first round pick OL Andrew Smith comes to mind. But that’s in the past and the situation with Chase is not the same.

According to Sports Illustrated the deal breaker with Chase concerns the guaranteed money. Specifically when the guarantees would go into effect. The Bengals offered Chase a four-year, $140 million contract with $90 million guaranteed. That guaranteed money included a $30 million signing bonus. The Bengals wanted the guaranteed money to be pushed out to 2027. That would put him at risk if he were to suffer a serious injury. Naturally Chase wanted the guaranteed money to kick in earlier in the deal to minimize his risks.

Despite not having a deal done, Chase did play last week in the game against the Patriots. He and the Bengals can still continue to negotiate to try and work out a deal. And it would behoove the Bengals to do that because Chase is a dynamic player and difference maker. He was taken with the fifth overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. In his rookie year he set a record for most receiving yards by a rookie with 1,455 yards. That same year he was instrumental in helping the team reach Super Bowl LVI. In all three of his seasons he has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards. Chase and QB Joe Burrow have been teammates since their days at LSU. No doubt that familiarity contributes to their successful collaboration on the field.

Someone who is extremely upset about Chase not having a new deal is commentator Stephen A. Smith. On ESPN’s First Take Smith said:

“You are listening to a guy and looking at a guy right now, who hopes Cincinnati loses every single damn game they play until they sign that man and they give him his money.” I hope that the Cincinnati Bengals fall flat on their damn face. That organization makes me sick. This man, Mike Brown, here you are. You got Joe Burrow, who is an all-world quarterback. This is an organization that spent years having fans wear bags over their head. This is how horrid they were with his notoriously cheap-a** self. Okay, he was considered the damn Donald Sterling of the National Football League.”

Well he didn’t hold back lol. Hopefully a deal will get done soon.
