It was scary to see their franchise quarterback collide head first with Bills safety Damar Hamlin. The collision resulted in another concussion for the signal-caller. Thus the Miami Dolphins were inclined to make some roster moves including Tua Tagovailoa going to IR. The injured/reserved list is commonly referred to as IR. That designation means the quarterback will miss a minimum of four games. However, his being on IR doesn’t count against the active roster which frees up a roster spot for someone else. But his salary will still count against the salary cap. However, as head coach Mike McDaniel said, “What it means is that to properly prioritize what’s most important that I have to put his health as the primary.

So Tagovailoa will take this time to work on his health and not focus on getting back on the field right now. The Dolphins already have Skylar Thompson as their backup quarterback and behind him is Tim Boyle. But they acquired Tyler Huntley from Baltimore’s practice squad. Huntley is a five-year NFL veteran who has spent the last four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. When asked why Huntley was the choice to be brought in McDaniel said:

“…it’s been apparent from afar and then having some coaches that have been around him, shoot, he was replacing the league MVP and you could tell from far away that he was a guy that the team absolutely believed could lead them to victory. I think that’s a very huge tangible thing for a non-QB1.” He also added, “this is not in any direct reflection to Skylar as Tua’s backup. This is more for the depth.”

In other roster moves, the Dolphins signed tackle Jackson Carman to the practice squad and released wide receiver Robbie Chosen from the practice squad. Carman spent the last three seasons with the Bengals (2021-23), appearing in 22 games with six starts. He also appeared in seven postseason games with two starts.

Chosen is a nine-year veteran wide receiver who has played for the New York Jets, the Carolina Panthers, and the Arizona Cardinals. He was with Miami in 2023 and played in both games in the 2024 season. Chosen appeared in Miami’s 2024 season opener against Jacksonville. And he was elevated from the practice squad to play in the Thursday night game against the Buffalo Bills.
