It seems like when one thing goes wrong then several more things also go wrong. And that is the case with two AFC teams. Both the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs have added players to their IR. In Miami’s case they have placed standout pass rusher Jaelan Phillips on the IR (Injured Reserve list). He is out for the rest of the season with a knee injury. As for the Chiefs, they have moved wide receiver Rashee Rice to the IR as well. Miami is already without their starting QB Tagovailoa and Kansas City is without dynamic running back Isiah Pacheco. Both of those players are already on IR and it’s unknown if they will return this season.

So when it rains it pours as both teams lost more vital members of their roster. To fill the void left by Phillips, Miami signed veteran pass rusher Tyus Bowser off of the Seahawks’ practice squad on Thursday. Ironically, Bowser played against the Dolphins in Week 3 when the Seahawks beat the Dolphins 3-24. Bowser provides Miami with another edge option to go with Emmanuel Ogbah and Chop Robinson.

Things are just as turbulent for the Kansas City Chiefs. Rice was injured when QB Patrick Mahomes collided with his knee as he tried to tackle a Chargers’ player. Mahomes expressed his remorse about the injury:

When I saw the replay, I felt like s— that I hit Rashee. I think that’s pretty much all …I mean, I wasn’t really worried about myself. I was worried about, hopefully, his injury, and hopefully that it wasn’t as bad as it looked because I was the one that hit him.”

The Chiefs feared that Rashee Rice had suffered a torn ACL. Head coach Andy Reid said more testing was needed.

However, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Chiefs have tapped the brakes on confirming that the ACL is torn, if it truly is. I like his take on the situation:

Entering the season, the goal for Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice was to have a strong second year, establish himself as a clear No. 1 receiver, and delay the consequences for his street-racing incident until 2025. Now that he has suffered a knee injury that apparently (but not definitely) will end his 2024 season, the plan will change.

The goal will become, we believe (and we’re told), to resolve the eight pending felony charges and to serve any suspension this year, while he’s otherwise unable to play. Then, come 2025, the incident, and the injury, will be behind him.

So is Rice’s injury a blessing in disguise? We’ll see.
