It didn’t appear to be a deal that absolutely had to get done, but it did. And it is a good deal for all parties involved. On Saturday the Detroit Lions and running back David Montgomery agreed to a new contract extension. It makes him the seventh-highest-paid running back in the NFL based on new money per year ($9.125M). According to a post from Adam Schefter:

“Lions RB David Montgomery reached agreement on a two-year, $18.25 million extension that contractually ties him to Detroit through the 2027 season, per source. The deal includes $10.5 million in new guaranteed money. Montgomery had two years left on his current deal. Detroit taking care of its own early.”

So the Lions wanted to take care of business to make sure Montgomery stayed with the team. Still they have second year dynamic running back Jahmyr Gibbs on the team, isn’t he enough? No, it isn’t as Schefter goes on to explain:

David Montgomery initially signed a 3-year, $18M deal with Detroit, and despite the team drafting Jahmyr Gibbs in the first round last year, Montgomery has now secured another 2-year, $18.25M contract. He and Gibbs are locked in as a 1-2 punch for years to come.

A team can never have too much of a good thing. Even Gibbs pointed out the benefit of having them both in the backfield:

Gibbs said he feels that he and Montgomery are the NFL’s best RB duo. “I don’t think it’s close at all,” Gibbs told ESPN. “We both can do everything, so it’s hard for defenses to scheme up against us. I mean the production speaks for itself, too.”

And speaking of production, Gibbs can back up his claim. He has 285 rushing yards on 54 attempts and three TDs. Whereas Montgomery is right behind him with 271 yards and four touchdowns on a team-high 63 carries this season.Detroit Lions And David Montgomery Agreed To New Contract ExtensionIt’s not often that you hear about great running back duos. Mostly because they both want all the carries all the time. For instance back in the late 80’s Marcus Allen and Bo Jackson tried to coexist as a running back duo. Both were extremely talented running backs, but it didn’t quite work out. Check out this clip from NFL Network’s A Football Life. For now Gibbs and Montgomery seem happy to share the carries and the load. That’s bad news for the Dallas Cowboys who the Lions will face on Sunday. The Dallas defense ranks 29th in rushing yards allowed before contact, giving up an average of 2.1 yards before the opposing ball carrier is even touched. Yikes!
