He was signed to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad just prior to the 2024 season. And he has languished there ever since. However, now Dalvin Cook has been elevated to the Cowboys roster and will start Sunday versus the San Franciso 49ers on Sunday. The Cowboys running game is ranked near the bottom in the NFL in rushing yards per game. They’re also last in average yards per carry at 3.5. They’re tied for last with only two rushing touchdowns.

They re-signed Ezekiel Elliott this year reuniting him with Dak Prescott. But so far Elliott hasn’t been the rusher he once was for the Cowboys. He could end up being a healthy scratch this week with the elevation of Cook. It wouldn’t make sense to carry four running backs into game day. Yesterday, Cowboys executive Stephen Young, said on 105.3 The Fan:

“Mike and (offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer) have been talking to us about how it’s about time for him to get his opportunity and we’ll see how everything goes tomorrow and make that call.”

Well the call has been made and Cook will finally get his opportunity. They would love for him to create a spark and get their rushing attack, or lack thereof, moving in the right direction. But it won’t be easy for Cook as he will be facing the 49ers defense that is pretty good at stopping the run. But this isn’t the Pro Bowler’s first rodeo.

He spent seven seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and never averaged less than 4.4 yards per carry during that time. Cook also worked with Mike Zimmer in Minnesota who was the head coach. He thrived under Zimmer and was happy to reunite with him with the Cowboys.

At 29 some wonder if he can still run the ball. But the former 1,000 yard rusher believes he still has the juice. “I got it,” he said in late August. “It’s right here.”

He went on to say: “Just keep your head down, no matter what,” Cook said. “No matter the circumstance, you still have to work hard, because I stuck to my routine throughout the season and then when I got to Baltimore, I was ready to go. I was ready to get the ball however times they needed me to, but it’s just unfortunate that I didn’t get it that much, but I was ready to go.”

Tomorrow we’ll all find out what Cook is still capable of doing. But surely it can’t be any worse than what we have seen so far from the Cowboys.
