Auburn QB Payton Thorne Says Gamblers Asked For Money After California Loss

Auburn senior quarterback Payton Thorne on Tuesday said following Saturday’s 21-14 loss to California, gamblers requested money from him via messages on Venmo. While appearing on “The Next Round,” Thorne said bettors messaged him on the peer-to-peer payment platform, after they lost their bets.

“They’re definitely not sending cash,” said Thorne, who threw one touchdown and four interceptions against the Golden Bears. “It’s funny. When they lose money, they want their money back. But when they win money on a parlay, no one’s ever sent me any of the money.”

According to ESPN’s David Purdum, although Thorne made light of the requests for money during his appearance, the incident is something that the NCAA is monitoring and attempting to prevent from occurring again.

Maryland, Louisiana, Ohio, and Vermont are among the states that have banned sportsbooks from offering prop bets on college players. New Jersey does not allow betting on local college teams, but the Garden State does allow betting on college player props.

Purdum also cited a study by Signify, an artificial intelligence company and NCAA partner. The company discovered that 1-in-3 high-profile college athletes receive messages from individuals with a “betting interest.” Auburn University did not comment on this story.

NCAA president Charlie Baker called for a ban on all college prop bets earlier this year

“This all has to stop,” NCAA president Charlie Baker said in June. “So far we’ve managed to work with four states to shut down prop betting on college sports.”

Baker also called for a ban on all college prop bets in March.

“Sports betting issues are on the rise across the country with prop bets continuing to threaten the integrity and competition and leading to student athletes and professional athletes getting harassed,” Baker said in a statement.

“The NCAA has been working with states to deal with these threats and many are responding by banning college prop bets.”

Auburn will have the chance to improve to 2-1 on Saturday, when they host New Mexico.
