Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is dealing with an injury to his calf. Will the veteran quarterback play in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos?

Will Russell Wilson Play In Week 2?

Wilson sat out Pittsburgh’s 18-10 Week 1 victory over the Atlanta Falcons with a calf injury. Will Wilson be ready to go against the Broncos in Week 1?

Wilson told reporters after Wednesday’s practice that he’s “getting closer and closer” to a return.

“Anybody who knows me, I always want to go and play and that’s how I get my mind ready, my body ready for that, to play,” Wilson said (via Mike DeFabo). “At the end of the day, I believe you got to play dinged-up sometimes. I think Coach, he’s also and the trainers just want to be smart, too, as well just because it’s early in the season. I think that if this is the last game of the season kind of thing or one of those kinds of games, we’re definitely going.”

Wilson said he talked with head coach Mike Tomlin on Sunday and decided to be smart about his injury and sit out Week 1.

“I think right now I want to go, but we also, too, want to be smart, too, as well.”

Wilson was on the sidelines in pads as the emergency third quarterback in Week 1. Wilson will likely serve in the same role against Denver, the organization that released him with three years remaining on a $242 million contract.

With Wilson likely out, who will start at quarterback?

Justin Fields is the leading candidate to start again under center for the Steelers in Denver on Sunday afternoon.

In his start against the Falcons, Fields completed 17 of 23 yards for 156 yards and rushed for 57 yards on 14 carries. Pittsburgh’s offense did not score a touchdown, generating all 18 points off six field goals.

Fields acted as a game manager in Week 1, moving the chains at the right time and putting his team in a position to score. More importantly, Fields did not turn the ball over, an issue that plagued his time with the Chicago Bears.

If Fields leads the Steelers to a 2-0 start, Tomlin will have a serious decision to make at quarterback once Wilson is cleared.
