Riverside Resort & Casino in Laughlin, Nevada, reported a data breach affecting more than 55,000 people who may have had their personal information compromised nearly two months ago.

Riverside Resort & Casino said the external system breach occurred on July 25, state regulators were informed on Sept. 5

The resort-casino informed its customers and various state regulators of the data breach on Sept. 5, according to a notification letter signed by General Manager Matthew Laughlin.

An external system breach occurred on July 25, and the resort-casino determined how many individuals may have had their information exposed to cybercriminals on Aug. 9.

Additionally, Riverside officials said names and social security numbers may have been taken from the cyber breach. However, the property’s management said it had not found cases of fraud or identity theft as of the Sept. 5 letter.

The resort-casino offered affected customers one year of free credit monitoring services and fraud assistance, according to the notification letter sent to those customers and shared with various state regulators.

Moreover, attorneys representing Riverside estimated that 55,155 people were affected by the breach, according to a filing in the Maine Office of the Attorney General.

A class-action lawsuit was filed against the resort-casino

“Data security is one of our highest priorities. Upon detecting this incident, we moved quickly to initiate an investigation,” Laughlin said in the notification letter.

“We promptly disabled all relevant accounts and worked with our third-party specialists to confirm the security of our environment. Again, we take the protection and proper use of personal information seriously.”

Furthermore, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Riverside Resort & Casino on Wednesday, according to filings in the U.S. District Court of Nevada.

According to McKenna Ross of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a Massachusetts resident accused the property of negligence, breach of implied contract, and unjust enrichment. The person seeks damages and other relief via jury trial.

Riverside Resort & Casino employs more than 1,719 people and generates over $300 million in annual revenue. In fact, an estimated five million people visit the resort-casino per year.
