NASCAR Cup Series YellaWood 500 Entry List: Dates, Event Times At Talladega Superspeedway
By Jeff Hawkins,
NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson opened the Round of 12 similar to how he started the Round of 16.
The 2021 circuit champion slammed into a wall.
On the 19th lap of Sunday’s Hollywood Casino 400 Presented by ESPN BET, Larson’s No. 5 Chevrolet, which ran P10, suffered a cut tire and collided with the Turn 2 wall at Kansas Speedway, signaling the second caution period.
Entering Sunday as the playoffs points leader, Larson continued racing through a 56-lap green-flag run, but battled steering problems and was eventually lapped, finishing Stage 1 P35. Larson benefited from Daniel Hemric’s Lap 143 spin to get back on the lead lap.
As non-playoff pilot Ross Chastain played spoiler by edging William Byron by 0.388 seconds to earn his fifth career Cup title, Larson limped to a 25th-place finish. Larson opened the postseason with a crash at Atlanta, but rallied to advance to the next round. Can he do it again over the next two outings, beginning at Talladega Superspeedway next Sunday?
Larson departed Kansas P4 in the standings, 18 points above the cutoff line.
