Earlier this week, the West Virginia Lottery reported that online and retail sportsbooks combined for $7.1 million in revenue, which came from a $46.4 million handle. September’s 15.3% hold was the highest month for West Virginia in 2024. Revenue was up 48% year-over-year. This was the sixth straight month that West Virginia sportsbooks combined for a double-digit hold.

The last time West Virginia operators failed to have a double-digit hold was in March 2024 at 9%. West Virginia saw a 47.5% month-over-month increase in revenue. September was the first full month with college football and the NFL to bet on. Leading to a larger handle and more revenue for operators in the state. West Virginia coffers collected over $604,000 in September.

How profitable were West Virginia retail sportsbooks in September?

As online sports betting becomes more popular, the demand for physical retail locations begins to diminish. In September 2024, online betting sites accounted for 90% of all wagers placed. The state’s 21% hold led to a combined $1 million in revenue, their highest hold percentage this year. West Virginia’s $4.7 million handle was up an outstanding 42% month-over-month.

Additionally, that was up 261% compared to their figures in July 2024. The last summer month without any football to wager on. The Hollywood Casino at Charles Town had $2.6 million in retail wagers and a 25.7% hold. That was enough for $664,000 in revenue. Mardi Gras casino enjoyed a 22% hold and a handle of $483,000.

What West Virginia online sportsbooks were the most profitable in September?

Four operators have control of the West Virginia online sports wagering market. Charles Town manages DraftKings, ESPN BET, and Fanatics Sportsbook. The Greenbrier has FanDuel and BetMGM. Mountaineer has Caesars and BetRivers, while Mardi Gras manages Betly. Charles Town and Greenbrier are the two operators who competed the most in September.

DraftKings, ESPN BET, and Fanatics Sportsbook helped Charles Town generate $20 million in wagers for September 2024. That was the highest of any online operator in the state. A 14.3% win rate helped the sportsbooks combine for $2.9 million in revenue. FanDuel and BetMGM were not too far behind with $19.4 million in wagers. However, a 15.3% hold was enough for the Greenbrier to generate $100,000 more in revenue than Charles Town in September.
