Hendrick Motorsports started celebrating the initial advancement of all four teams to the NASCAR Cup Series’ Round of 8. A few hours later, however, some party-goers were forced to leave.

During a post-race inspection, officials deemed Alex Bowman’s No. 48 Chevrolet 17 pounds too light. Sunday’s disqualification at Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course cost Bowman an opportunity to compete in the next round of the playoffs.

Hendrick Motorsports on Monday declined to appeal the decision.

Still, the Charlotte, N.C.-based organization celebrated Larson’s Bank of America ROVAL 400 win and the No. 5 Chevrolet team’s third trip to the third round of the playoffs for the third time in four seasons.

Larson, who captured the circuit title in 2021, has visited Victory Lane 10 times during his last 36 playoff starts. He enters the Round of 8 opener as the sports-betting favorite, drawing +300 odds, per BetOnline Sportsbook.

Below, we’ll preview the top storylines heading into Sunday’s South Point 400, go over the odds, and give our best bets for the 33rd and Round of 8 opening race on the 2024 NASCAR schedule.

    South Point 400 Storylines

    • Is Kaulig Racing quickly emerging as one of stock-car racing’s top organizations? It certainly is on road courses. AJ Allmendinger earned a P6 and Shane van Gisbergen a P7 during the Charlotte Road Course. It was the first time the garage placed two in the top 10. When will it accomplish the feat a second time?
    • Legacy Motor Club continues to struggle. At the ROVAL, Erik Jones finished P33 and John Hunter Nemechek earned a P34. In three of the organization’s past four events, both pilots placed outside of the top 30.
    • After facing a long week and several nervous moments leading up to the birth of twins last week, Chase Briscoe endured more anxiety during the race. His P36 marked the fourth time in six outings he failed to fare better than P24. Good luck with diaper duty, Chase.

South Point 400 Predictions and Picks

Here are our best NASCAR Cup Series bets for the South Point 400 at South Point 400:

    Kyle Larson (+300)

With three wins in his past seven starts at Las Vegas, Larson is proving to be the Cup Series’ top driver. Last week at the Charlotte ROVAL, Larson led 62 of 109 laps to win his series-best sixth race of the season.

    Christopher Bell (+850)

Coming off a runner-up finish at Charlotte, Bell continues his championship quest on a hot streak. He has compiled seven top-seven finishes in his last eight starts.

    Kyle Reddick (+900)

After the ROVAL, Reddick’s comeback appeared to be “one for the books.” But, after Bowman’s disqualification, Reddick’s rally of 15 spots over the final 28 rotations was a bit anticlimactic. Still, impressive, though.
