SPRING CITY — The ballot for the upcoming Spring City municipal election will soon be set as the deadline for candidates to submit qualifying petitions is noon on Thursday, April 4.

Rhea County Administrator of Elections Felicia Goodman said that this year, the Spring City mayoral seat, as well as two seats on the city commission, are up for grabs. She said that incumbent Woody Evans, Reed Smith and Leon Locke have all picked up petitions to run for Spring City mayor. As of press time Tuesday, Goodman said that Evans and Smith have since returned their petitions to run and that Locke had not yet returned his qualifying petition.

She said that in the race for two city commission seats, Thomas Beaver and Kevin Jenkins have both picked up and returned qualifying petitions.

The Spring City municipal election will take place on the same day as the county general election on Thursday, April 1.

Since there were no Democratic Party candidates in the recent county general elections, the primary effectively decided the race, and there will be no Democratic candidates in the county general election.

In March, in contested county GOP primary races, Rick Wilkey defeated incumbent road supervisor Glen Varner, 4,101-1,091, while incumbent District 4 school board member Bimbo McCawley defeated challenger Heath Smith, 358-266.

In uncontested county primary races, Rhea County Assessor of Property Debbie Byrd received 4,299 votes, District 2 school board member B.J. McCoy received 419 votes, District 6 school board member Wayne Cox received 235 votes and District 8 school board member Chip Pendergrass received 490 votes.

Early voting for the Aug. 1 Spring City municipal election and the county general election runs fro July 12 to July 27, and the vote registration deadline for that election is July 2. If you have already registered to vote, you do not need to re-register. All voters must show a state- or federally-issued form of identification prior to casting their ballots.
