SPRINGDALE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — One Springdale organization is working to instill a love of reading in children in the Latino community this summer.

One Community helps immigrants navigate the school system and is hosting a 7-week bilingual reading program to prevent summer learning loss in students.

During the ‘Feed Your Brain’ program, students read books in English or Spanish and participate in activities related to the stories. Some kids will read around 100 books during the summer program, according to Julieta Ortiz, One Community’s director of operations.

“In the Latino culture we are normally not raised with reading in the home,” Ortiz said. “But now we’re creating this, and it’s getting bigger and bigger every time.”
