After a crash left one person dead on Highway 21 and McCall Road in Springfield , residents took to social media calling for more safety measures.

Their voices were heard as far away as Atlanta.

The Georgia Department of Transportation and Effingham County are fast tracking the process of installing a traffic light at the Springfield bypass. Laura Devisscher, 45, was killed during the incident June 17 and two others were hospitalized.

The traffic light at the intersection was already in the works as the Board of Commissioners approved the project last fall. A press release on Effingham County Board of Commissioner's Facebook page reads, “Prompted by an increase in traffic and accidents, the Effingham County Board of Commissioners reached out to GDOT and asked for a signal to be installed at the intersection. GDOT agreed to make the addition following a traffic study.”

According to Fire Captain Hannah Jenkins, the fire department has responded to nine accidents at the same location in the last year.

No timetable has been given as to when the traffic light will be installed. Latrice Williams is a general assignment reporter covering Bryan and Effingham County. She can be reached at lwilliams6@gannett.com.
