    Power restored for thousands in Central IL after summer storms

    6/26 UPDATE — All power was restored to Springfield customers by midnight, CWLP posted on Facebook. According to Ameren, 210 customers in Champaign County do not have power as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, with the majority remaining being in neighborhoods around Centennial Park.


    8:00 P.M. UPDATE — CWLP reports only three outages and 41 still affected in Springfield. Meanwhile, Ameren now has under 800 power outages in Champaign County.


    7:00 P.M. UPDATE — As the evening progresses, even more places now have power. CWLP reports only 351 customers do not have power. And Ameren is reporting 1,476 customers without power in Champaign County.


    4:45 P.M. UPDATE — Power has been restored to many customers in both areas. In Springfield, the number of people without power has been reported to 588. For Champaign County, Ameren has reported the number of people without power is down to 2,637.

    4:00 PM UPDATE: Power outages have been reported in several other places in Central Illinois.

    More than 3,500 people are without power in the Champaign-Urbana area. One large outage near the intersection of Staley and Windsor Roads in southwest Champaign. According to the outage map, an additional 260 customers are without power near Mattis and Bradley Avenues.

    An Ameren official said the cause of some of the outages in Champaign is the heat stressing out the system.

    SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Ahead of Tuesday’s storm, crews in Springfield are already reporting just under 2,000 people are currently without power.

    Crews are working quickly to restore the outages. Just after 1 p.m., around 2,400 customers were without power — more than 1,000 less than the amount reported around noon. At 1:20 p.m., the number of affected customers was at 1,699, while at 1:45 p.m, 1,278 customers had no power.

    As of 2 p.m. there were 1,373 customers without power. According to the CWLP outage map crews were responding to another outage near the intersection of Wabash Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard. At 2:30 p.m., only 787 customers are without power, and the power was fully restored at White Oaks substation.

    At 2:45 p.m., CWLP said crews are responding to a new outage impacting 555 customers in an area along N. Grand Ave to E. Dodge and E. Phillips between N. 1st and N 10th approximately.

    Another outage is being reported near Eastdale Avenue near Cook Street. According to the map, 663 customers were without power around 3 p.m.

    City Light Water & Power has reported three major outages. The first one is affecting over 1,400 customers in an area from E. Cook St. to E. Ash St. between Taylor Ave. and S. 12th St. approximately. Officials said a tree fell on a pole at Wheeler and Kansas.

    The second outage includes an area by the White Oaks substation from Greenbriar Dr. to areas along W. Iles Ave between Archer Elevator Rd. and W. White Oaks Drive. This outage is affecting 1,200 customers.

    The third outage area is from S. Grand Ave. to W. Ash St. between S. Douglas Ave. and S. College St. approximately, along with a section of S. Whittier Ave. and S. Lowell Ave. to the south to W. Lenox Ave. Approximately 850 customers are impacted.

    CWLP said the cause of the second and third outages are unknown.

    Officials remind people to drive safe and treat intersections without working traffic signals as having stop signs.

    CWLP tracks outages using a city map , and provides updates to restoring power on the map.

    Any electric system damage like power lines down can be reported to 217-789-2121, though officials ask for patience as said the call volume will be high.
