SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — An overnight shooting and police standoff in Springfield landed three men in the hospital early Sunday.

It happened around 1:04 a.m. The Springfield Police Department received an alert from ShotSpotter, a gunshot detection service, indicating gunfire in the area of South 15th and East Ash Streets.

Upon arrival, two men were found with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. They directed officers to a house with rifle casings in the yard. The victims were then taken to local hospitals for treatment.

Police tried to speak with the house’s residents, but said the occupants were uncooperative and barricaded the door. Officers spent a long amount of time trying to contact the residents with a loud speaker.

Eventually, someone inside the house shot at Springfield Police, hitting a rescue vehicle occupied by several officers. More shots were fired from the home and towards police, once again striking the rescue vehicle. At this time, an officer returned fire.

Police said they continued their attempts to communicate until a home occupant stepped out and told officers that someone within the home had been shot.

First responders entered the home, secured all occupants, and rendered aid to the hurt individual. His wounds were considered non-life-threatening and he was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Springfield Police said no officers were hurt during the incident. Both they and the Illinois State Police continue to investigate the situation.

Anyone with more information is asked to call the Springfield Police Department at 217-788-8311. Tipsters may also anonymously call Sangamon/Menard County Crime Stoppers at 217-788-8427.
