Solange Knowles takes to social media to speak out about the violent killing of Sonya Massey, offering the family support. On Tuesday morning (July 23) the musician shared her grim reaction to Massey’s death. Massey was fatally wounded by law enforcement after calling 911 for help earlier this month in Springfield, IL.

Body camera footage capturing the incident was released on Monday evening. In her message, the “Cranes In The Sky” singer refers to dialogue heard in the traumatizing clip.

“first words Sonya Massey said at her front door were ‘don’t hurt me’ she was told ‘why would we hurt you, you called us,'” shared Knowles on X.

“when have those words meant anything when your black and woman in this country when do those words protect you from not being murdered in your kitchen, in your bedroom, with your babies, or on your lawn what is ‘reassurance’, in this place ?”

She continued, “rest in power Sonya Massey, and an abundance of love and power to Sonya’s family on this journey.”

According to The Cut , on July 6 Massey called 911 after suspecting an intruder had entered her home. However, within minutes of police arrival, she was shot dead by Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson. After being terminated from his position, Grayson is charged with first-degree murder after a use-of-force expert found the deputy was not “justified in his use of deadly force.”

A statement issued on Tuesday by attorney Ben Crump confirms Grayson is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and official misconduct. He is being held in police custody without bail.

CBS News reported the bodycam footage did not come from Grayson but from a second officer who also responded to the call. At first, Massey is seen sitting with the officers, offering to file paperwork and searching for an identification card. She is then instructed by Grayson to check on a pot of water on the stove.

“Where are you going?” Massey is heard saying.

“Away from your hot, steaming water,” Grayson says.

“Away from my hot steaming water?” Massey seems to say in the video. “I rebuke you in the name of Jesus.”

    “What?” Grayson says.

“I rebuke you in the name of Jesus,” Massey says.

“You’d better fu**ing not. I swear to God, I’ll f**king shoot you right in your f**king face,” raising his gun and demanding that Massey “drop the f**king pot.” According to the report, Massey is seen apologizing and ducking for cover, before Grayson fires three shots, then activating his body camera.

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks at a news conference at the Filoli Estate on November 15, 2023 in Woodside, California.

“I was under the impression that a prowler had broke in and killed my baby, never did they say there was a deputy involved shooting until my brother read it on the internet,” detailed Sonya Massey’s father, James (Renee) Wilburn per ABC 20.

After the body camera footage was released, President Joe Biden issued a statement regarding Massey’s shooting and continued police violence against Black people.

“Sonya’s death at the hands of a responding officer reminds us that all too often Black Americans face fears for their safety in ways many of the rest of us do not,” reads the statement.

“I commend the swift actions that were taken by the Springfield State’s Attorney’s office. While we wait for the case to be prosecuted, let us pray to comfort the grieving. Congress must pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act now. Our fundamental commitment to justice is at stake.”
