Illinois sheriff’s deputy Sean P. Grayson, who has been fired from his position, is currently facing charges for the shooting death of Sonya Massey. According to records obtained by CBS News, Grayson had a history of disciplinary issues, including allegations of bullying and misuse of authority.

New audio recordings obtained by the news outlet reveal that senior officers had concerns about Grayson’s conduct 20 months before the fatal shooting of Massey. In the recording from the Logan County (Illinois) Sheriff’s Office, where Grayson was employed from May 2022 to April 2023, captures a supervising officer reprimanding Grayson for his alleged lack of integrity, falsifying reports, and engaging in what was described as “official misconduct.”

“The sheriff and I will not tolerate lying or deception,” the officer informs him during the audio recording of a meeting from November 2022. During the conversation the supervising officer warns Grayson that “officers [like you] have been charged and they end up in jail. Seven months on, how are you still employed by us?” the officer says to him. Grayson replies, “I don’t know.”

The family of Sonya Massey is requesting an investigation into the hiring of a sheriff’s deputy accused of fatally shooting the 36-year-old Black woman in her Illinois home. They are concerned about the deputy’s employment history, which includes working at six law enforcement agencies in four years and being charged with driving under the influence twice.

Sean Grayson, the 30-year-old former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy, was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count each of aggravated battery with a firearm and official misconduct in connection with the shooting at Massey’s home near Springfield.
