Louisiana teacher starts online group to help other teachers with classroom necessities

SPRINGFIELD, La. ( WGNO ) — The new school year can be just as expensive for teachers as it is for parents.

“As a teacher, I know how much we actually spend out of our own pockets to decorate our classrooms and get extra supplies for students,” said Springfield High School teacher Dianne Cothern.

The National Education Association reports that, on average, educators spend between $500 and $750 of their own money every year on their students’ needs.

Knowing the feeling all too well, Cothern decided to start a Facebook group called “ Clear the List for Teachers 2024 ” as a way to help teachers save where they can.

“Every day there is a new member that joins the group. People are inviting them. We see people who are not educators hopping on there and looking at people’s wish lists. It is growing by the day. So, I am excited to see where it goes,” said Cothern.

And it continues to grow, reaching over 2,000 followers across the U.S. Besides the donations from those joining the group, she also does giveaways, saying the items are purchased and sent directly to the teachers.

“I have teachers on there from Washington and New Jersey. It could be as small as $10, and these teachers are so grateful. They post what they get on the group page. They are just so excited. Every little bit helps,” said Cothern.

In the end, she explains it makes a difference when the students come back and see the classrooms.

“It is a sense of belonging, a sense of comfort. Having a classroom that is welcoming and inviting gets the kids excited for the school year,” said Cothern.
