SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Now that it is summer, it is important to remember to protect yourself from the sun.
West Nile Virus positive mosquitoes detected in Massachusetts When we are in the summer months, the sun is the strongest in the sky, so even though we are exposed to UV radiation all year long, protection in the summer is most important. People of all age and skin color can get sunburn, so it is important to limit your time in the sun. Extended exposure to the sun without protection can lead to skin cancer.
“We started off with hats, that didn’t last all that long, but fortunately in Forest Park there is a lot of shade,” said Jerry Sprofera of East Longmeadow.
Everyone’s skin type is different. Some can use a lower SPF and develop a tan, while others need a higher SPF like 50 as they are more prone to sunburn.
The Food and Drug Administration recommends limiting your time in the sun between the hours of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., but for some, it is hard to avoid those times… especially by the pool.
“I would like for them to have fun, it’s summer. I want them to enjoy themselves, sunscreen is the way to go, no matter what,” said Nahaliel Filomeno from Nam’s School.
The FDA recommends sunscreens that say broad-spectrum with an SPF of at least 15 but ideally higher. It is also important to apply sunscreen to your scalp if it is exposed and wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
If you are going to be by the pool or traveling to a beach, remember that no sunscreen is waterproof. Some are water resistant, but they still need to be reapplied.
